Northern Ireland relies on heating oil more than any other part of the UK. Septic tanks and private water supplies are common in the countryside too.

Key rules for rural homes in Northern Ireland

  • Heating oil: in the 2021 census, 480,635 of 768,810 households in Northern Ireland had oil central heating, 62.5% (NISRA). With so many homes relying on oil, it pays to keep tanks and boilers in good order. See our heating oil page.
  • Septic tanks: discharges are regulated by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (DAERA). NI Water offers septic tank emptying at set charges (NI Water).
  • Private water supplies: supplies serving more than a single home are monitored by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. A supply to a single private dwelling isn't monitored, but you can ask your council's environmental health department to test it (DAERA).
  • Grants: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales only (GOV.UK).
